Today is July 4th, the day the USA celebrates Independence Day and the concept of socio-political freedom. Today’s post contains a prayer and the Declaration of Independence. My own political views about justice and freedom have appeared here and there on this blog, and your own views may differ from mine, but on this day I hope we can join hands and celebrate the value of socio-political freedom and commit ourselves to working for such freedom for all. And pray for peace in the world. (FYI: No gun comments today, please.)

Harman Baweja finally makes his much-awaited debut in a lavish 50 - 55 crore movie titled Love Story 2050! Directed by Harry Baweja, his father, of Qayamat fame (the Ajay Devgan movie that released in 2003). Since Qayamat, Harry has been busy working on Love Story 2050, his son’s mega debut. Priyanka Chopra is Harman’s co-star in the movie. Expectations are high, mostly due to the high-on-special-effects trailers and good promotion. Does it click?
Love Story 2050 starts off as a simple love story that revolves around two characters Karan (Harman Baweja) and Sana (Priyanka Chopra). Karan is a happy-go-lucky spirited boy who goes off the rules and Sana is a shy and petite young girl who goes by the rules. What happens when opposites meet? They are attracted, love blossoms between the two. All comes to a stand still when Sana dies in a accident!
In search of his love, Karan goes into the future, right into the year 2050 with the help of his scientist uncle Dr Ya (Boman Irani) who has spent more than 15 years of his life inventing the time machine. 2050 is spectacular, flying cars, sky-high multi storey buildings, robots et al. Karan finds Zeisha (Priyanka Chopra), now a superstar, a pop singer.
Will Karan and Sana get back again? Will the future bring them together?
Harry Baweja has undoubtedly put in a lot of effort and hard work into Love Story 2050, whether its the costumes, settings, special effects and to a certain extent even robots. But unfortunately, the script is way below average. The story is nonsensical, the love story lacks soul, you dont feel for any single character in the movie. Harry Baweja as a story teller fails big time.
The first half is never ending, but towards the end it gets slightly interesting, you hope for a better second half. Imagining life 42 years from now is exciting, but what unfolds on the screen in the second half is probably equilvalent to a third degree torture. It painfully drags, the special effects although great, outshines the love story, you no more care for any of the characters. The robots and the special effects too starts to get monotonous towards the end. 30 mins into the second half, you desperately await the end for the credits to roll.. Yes, its that bad!
The runtime is 3 hours plus, most of the portions can be chopped off easily. For example the character of the masked villian, who appears in the latter parts of the second half, was absolutely unnecessary. He also seems to be a last minute inspiration of Naseeruddin Shah’s character in Krrish.
Seriously, its very hard to sit through this movie. The packed house for the preview show, was almost half empty, well before the credits rolled!
Dialogues are irritating.. Harman’s favorite dialogue in the movie is ‘I dont need luck, because i have love’ He repeats it so many times that, you feel an urgent need to pull every hair out of your head! Music is average, except for the ‘Milo Na Milo’ track, nothing is even worth a mention.
Performances are no better! Harman Baweja has been compared to Hrithik Roshan, no less! Well, he is good looking, a excellent dancer, has got a good screen presence.. But in the acting department, he has a long long way to go. His dialogue delivery outright sucks! Priyanka Chopra disappoints in a meaty role, with great scope for histrionics. Boman Irani is funny at times. Archana Puran Singh is good.
In short, Love Story 2050 is yet another major disappointment of 2008. A utter waste of Rs 50 crores plus spent on this never ending tale. The opening at the box-office is expected to be good, but the negative word-of-mouth would affect Harman’s debut. The collections should start dropping heavily from Monday. This futuristic tale has absolutely no future!
The common question comes to mind when aamir khan is producing a film will be, how the movie is going to be? Coming to jaane tu ya jaane na, will it live up to the expectations?
Story:
While Jaane Tu is Imran’s debut vehicle, it is really Genelia who steals the show. The actress is a real livewire on screen and conveys those annoying feelings of jealousy, confusion, irritability and fake happiness without any problem.
Within the gang, who sport very Bombay nicknames such as Rats (Jai), Meow (Aditi), Bombs (Sandhya), Jiggy (Jignesh), the guys fare much better than the girls. Jiggy delights as the Gujju while Rotlu and Bombs together are smashing as the couple who discover each other as soul mates when left solo by their crushes, Jai and Aditi.
Supporting cast members like Ratna Pathak Shah as Jai’s mum, Paresh Rawal as the police inspector, Naseeruddin Shah, as Jai’s dead Rajput father who speaks from his portrait hold, fort magnificently.
Even the sub-plot of Jai’s rite of passage as a true male Rathore from Ranjhore family by fulfilling three conditions - beating up a person, spending time in jail and riding a horse - is largely saved and made palatable by way of the safe casting of the Shahs and Arbaaz and Sohail Khan, who appear as Rathore boys in the guise of dancing cowboys.
On a whole jaane tu ya jaane na is a lovely cute movie honestly.
Its not a story which never heard or seen but then just like aamir said, It does revive good old college days and bring us a nice love story..
Viewers Review :
The film itself is a simple, young, urban, collegiate romantic comedy. And commentary on such movies should really boil down to, if it entertains you or not. This one does. Whether it works or not. For the most part, this does. There remains very little point intellectualising any further.
The premise is vintage stuff: basically whether the hero and heroine can merely be platonic friends. Or as they say in old Bollywood, Ladka aur ladki kabhi dost nahin ho sakte. You can see how the film is a wonderful attempt to subvert that age-old formula.
While this is about friends from, say Dil Chahta Hai or Kuch Kuch Hota Hai; everyone is not obnoxiously rich here. They don’t drive the fastest cars, or vacation in Holland or Switzerland.
This is still a mainstream youthful film. But everyone doesn’t bedazzle you with their beauty. They’re all attractive in their own ways, and they seem ‘people like us’.
Each friend represents a type. And yet, no one stoops down to stereotypes. They’re all characters with believable shades of grey.
There is the middle-class hero, Imraan, a non-violent son from what was once a violent royal family. He has a fun group of buddies from college.
One of them is the best-friend, that’s the spunky Genelia. They both share intense but casual chemistry.
Everyone including the parents assume them to be a couple. But their actual love for each other is revealed when the boy finds himself a girlfriend. And the girl is ready to settle down with her fiance. You know how all this will all end.
What keeps you glued then is the detailing in the writing: quirky sub-plots, witty lines and references, breezy situations and a general sense of joy.
Somewhere in the latter half of the film, what you miss though are certain magical moments that can lift all this material into another cinematic level altogether.
This is probably why when everything is brilliantly set up; you may come out of the interval with an ecstatic grin. You may not be that excited when the movie is over.
But you’re still in a good mood, and smiling alright. That’s a huge achievement for a Hindi film these days. I’d say, do check this one out.
Performances:
Coming to acting, every character has performed well enough.
Debutant Imran looks cool and acting is admirable.
I am not too much in favour of genelia but still she was good in the movie…
It’s a love story we all have seen earlier as well. But Abbas Tyrewala made it in such a way that movie looks fresh and touching.
Music: was as expected and well picturized. Thanks to Rehman. Imran would surely notch up a hit with this debut. The movie will surely have a decent opening.
Overall a sweet movie..

Well Russia have turned into a completely different team with the return of Andrei Arshavin. The Russian playmaker has pulled all the strings since his return from suspension and has really put Russia in with a glorious chance of progressing from the Euro 2008 Semi Final and into the final. Russia will feel they can beat anyone after the 3-1 victory over Holland and quite rightly so. Spain are a great side but Russia can definitely win this one.
Spain will be the favourites to beat Russia today and with their 100% record so far you can’t really argue with that. When you also add the fact that Spain have already beaten Russia at Euro 2008 this year (4-1) then you would feel confident of winning a few quid if you have Spain down for a win at the bookies.
So who will win? I would really like to see Spain reach the final as it has been a long time coming for the Spaniards in an International tournament but i can’t help but think it is going to be another case of “so close but not close enough” for Spain. The Russians have found a new gear they never knew they had and i think they are going to pinch this one. I am going for Russia 2 - Spain 2 with Russia winning in extra time.

Jaipur: The University of Rajasthan today, here, cancelled all examinations scheduled till June 7th in view of the protest campaign by the Gujjar community demanding more government benefits.
Officials at the varsity also postpone the written test for the state administration services which was to be conducted on June 8th by the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC).
The Railway Recruitment Board, Ajmer also called off an examination which was to be conducted for appointment of ticket collectors.
Prolonged rioting by the Gujjar community, which began in Rajasthan, has degenerated into bloodshed. The protests have now spread to the neighbouring states as well.
The Gujjars want to be included in a list of Scheduled Tribes to avail of more benefits from the central and state government.
When two people fight, it is the third person that gets the advantage. That is precisely what has happened in Ranbaxy Labs, one of India’s most respected pharma companies. The breaking news today is that the promoters of Ranbaxy have sold their stake to a Japanese company – Daiichi Sankyo. Yes, the two brothers – Malvinder Singh and Shivinder Singh, who have a 34.8% stake in Ranbaxy Labs have formally agreed to sell their entire stake to Japanese major Daiichi Sankyo.
This sell of stake means a complete exit of the promoters of the company. Late Bhai Mohan Singh who made Ranbaxy into what it is today was one of the most respected industrialists in India. Having founded Ranbaxy single handedly into the first Indian MNC, it is unfortunate that today, the same grandsons of this patriarch are exiting from the company. The ongoing family feud is stated to be reason.
The stake sell, expected at over 25-30% premium over today’s last traded price, makes perfect sense. Once could argue that the price is too high but that is precisely the way in which the cookie crumbles. If it is a foreign company taking over a very well reputed and established company, then a premium of 25-30% is routine. The same had been the case when Holcim had taken over the stake of ACC and Gujarat Ambuja.
The Japanese major will also make a mandatory open offer, as per the Indian laws, to buy an additional 20% stake in the company as also subscribing to 4.63 crore shares and 2.38 crore warrants at Rs.737 per share. At the end of this all, Daiichi Sankyo plans to have a controlling stake of above 51% stake in the Indian company.
The Board of Ranbaxy had decided to issue 462,58,063 equity shares of Rs.5 each at a premium of Rs.732 per share as also 238,34,333 warrants to be convertible at Rs.737 per share to Daiichi. This will increase the paid up equity of Ranbaxy from Rs.186.62 crore to Rs.221.67 crore, post warrant conversion. If Daiichi is able to have a 20% stake in the open offer (which is most likely) their stake would go up to 65%.
Post issue of equity by Ranbaxy to Daiichi, an open offer for about 8.88 crore shall be made by Daiichi for Ranbaxy shares at Rs.737 per share. Presently, about 18% is held by FIIs while, about 20% is held by Insurance companies and about 27% is held by the public, including mutual funds. It is expected that everyone would participate in the open offer as share price of Rs.737 is perceived to be quite attractive for any existing shareholder to get an exit route from the stock and would also, at the same time, give good arbitrage play.
Presently, Ranbaxy is holding a tad below 15% in Orchid Chemicals, Jupiter Bio and Krebs Bio while 45% in Zenotech Laboratories. Due to indirect acquisition of stake in Zenotech by Daiichi, even Zenotech would see open offer coming in the stock at a price to be determined under applicable SEBI guidelines.
As mentioned earlier, the reason for the exit, in all probability is the ongoing family feud. It all began in 1990, when Bhai Mohan Singh apportioned assets in 1990. His eldest son – Parvinder Singh got Ranbaxy, middle son Manjit got Montari Industries and youngest son, who was the apple of his eye, got Max India. In 1993, Bhai Mohan Singh was ousted in a bitter boardroom battle by Parvinder, who later threw out his father from the Board after disagreements over company management grew. Parvinder expired in 1999 and his successor, D.S.Brar took the company to greater heights.
When Bhai Mohan Singh died, he bequeathed most of his wealth to Analjit who was also made the sole legal heir to carry out all court battles. Manjit was given a gift of Rs.14 crore while grandchildren – Malvinder and Shivinder, who are now the promoters of Ranbaxy, were given Rs.5 lakhs each. So now, for the past few years, a bitter legal battle is raging between Manjit, Malvinder and Shivinder on one side and Analjit on the other side. The bone of contention is the ownership over Ranbaxy and assets like the Aurangzeb Road home where Bhai Mohan Singh had resided. Though an out-of-court settlement has been planned for some time now, it has just not happened.
And selling their stake was probably the best way out is what the grandsons of Bhai Mohan Singh, would have thought. This ends their continuous stress but shows how the new generation of today, after having got things on a platter, just does not have enough respect for anything – neither for the reputation of Bhai Mohan Singh nor for effort that has gone over decades for making Ranbaxy what it is today. The first Indian MNC would now become a Japanese company.
After the stake sale, it is expected that the bothers will also distribute the other group companies within themselves. It is widely talked that Fortis Healthcare would come under Malvinder Singh and Religare Enterprises would come under Shivinder.
All eyes would also now turn towards Cipla where the current Chairman and Managing Director, Dr.Hamid had also stated some time ago that he would soon step down. Would that mean a handing over of the reins to the chosen heir or stake sale?
